Abrasive discs for scrubber-driers: Choose easily
November 20, 2024What are abrasive discs for scrubber-driers and single disc machines?
Abrasive discs are the consumables associated with cleaning machines such as scrubber-driers or single brush machines. The discs are in direct contact with the floor and can achieve very different results depending on the type of disc chosen. The results can include cleaning, stripping, polishing, restoring or even oiling floors. Classic discs are made from 100% polyester fibres that are more or less rigid and abrasive depending on the colour of the disc selected. The discs in the GUIALTO range can be fitted to all makes of scrubber-drier and single brush machines on the market. The efficiency of the work carried out depends on the quality of the machine, but it also depends to a large extent on the quality of the discs selected. It's therefore important to choose good quality abrasive discs to ensure a high quality and satisfactory result. As the discs are consumables, it is also essential to check the wear of the disc before each use, so that it can be replaced if necessary. Cleaning, polishing or stripping floors with a disc that is too worn could render the work ineffective, or even damage the floor.
How do I select an abrasive disc?
There are many different types of disc, because they can be used for very different purposes, depending on the condition of the floor or the type of coating, for example. It all depends on the colour of the disc you choose: the lighter the colour, the less abrasive the disc. The aim will then be to polish and shine a floor that has already been cleaned with another disc. Conversely, the darker the colour of the disc, the more the desired effect is to clean or even strip the floor in depth to remove old layers of dirt. You'll find a detailed description of the characteristics of each disc colour here.
However, there are two rules to bear in mind. The first is that you need two discs to equip a scrubber-drier, whereas you only need one disc to equip a single-brush machine. The second point is that it is always preferable to select a disc size that is slightly larger than the diameter of the machine being used. This is because you don't want the machine plate to protrude from the disc and come into direct contact with the floor, which could damage both the floor and the machine.

What can technical discs do?
As well as classic polyester abrasive discs, there are other types of disc. But how do they differ from conventional discs, and when should they be used?
Firstly, there are Steel Wool discs. These discs are used on marble floors to crystallise the floor. These discs allow the temperature of the marble to rise, giving it an intensely shiny appearance - this is known as the crystallisation mechanism. GUIALTO's Steel Wool discs enable a controlled and effective crystallisation process, while protecting and not damaging the floor.
Abrasive Mesh discs are for use on varnished or wooden floor coverings, such as parquet or gymnasium floors. They remove layers of dirt and repair damaged floors. They must be used in combination with another disc on the machine side, to avoid damaging the scrubber-dryer plate.
Diamond discs are very similar to conventional discs. They come in different colours, and the same colour code is used as for conventional discs. The main difference is that diamond discs are made from very high quality materials, which makes them more resistant and durable over time.
Finally, melamine discs are versatile discs. They are made from thermo-compressed melamine foam. Because of their composition, they are not very abrasive, but are highly effective in removing black marks from floors and reducing soiling. They are comparable to magic sponges that can be used to remove black marks from walls. They can be used to clean floors such as stone, concrete and epoxy tiles at low speed to avoid damaging the floor. Finally, their textured composition means they are ideal for cleaning floors with uneven or uneven surfaces, especially tiles.
